The California Division of Safety of Dams conducts independent analysis
during its safety review of existing and proposed dams. The extent of these
analyses varies from project to project and depends upon a dam’s criticality
and/or site conditions.
The techniques and basis for the Division’s independent analysis
are derived from in-house analyses and studies of performance of dams
and their appurtenant structures under observed and/or measured loads.
Additionally, data associated with these loads as well as strength characteristics
of materials are examined.
